ထိုနေ့ ညနေခင်းမှာပင် ထိုခွေးဝဲစားသည် ကျွန်တော်၏ ခြံသို့ရောက်လာပါသည်။ ကျွန်တော်၏ ခွေးကလေး ခိုင်ယာနာ နောက်မှ နောက်ယောင်ခံ၍ လိုက်လာခြင်း ဖြစ်သည်။ ခြံစောင့်သည် သူ့ကို မြင်လိုက် သောအခါ ရုတ်တရက် သူ့အမဲလိုက်သေနတ်ကို ထုတ်လျက် ခွေးဝဲစားကို ပစ်သတ်လိုက်သည်။ ကျွန်တော် အိမ်ထဲမှ ထွက်လာစဉ်မှာပင် ပစ်သတ်လိုက်သည်။ ကျွန်တော့်မှာ တားချိန်ပင် မရလိုက်ပါ။ သေနတ်မှန်သော ခွေးဝဲစားသည် တခဏမျှ ဒယိမ်းဒယိုင် ဖြစ်၍၊ သနားစရာ အူပါသည်။ ထို့နောက် ရှားပင် အောက်၌ ပုံလဲ၍ အသက်ထွက်သွားရသည်။

ကျွန်တော်မြည်းကလေး ပလေတရိုသည် ခေါင်းထောင်၍ ခွေးဝဲစားကို ကြည့်ပါသည်။ ခွေးကလေး ဒိုင်ယာနာသည် သူ့ ကြောက်စိတ်ကို ဖုံးဖိနေဘိသကဲ့သို့ တောင်ပြေးမြောက်ပြေး ယောက်ယက်ခတ် ပြေးနေသည်။ ခြံစောင့်သည် စိတ်မကောင်းဖြစ်၍ နောင်တရပုံ ပေါက်ပါသည်။ သို့သော်လည်း ခွေးဝဲစား အပေါ် အပြစ်ပုံချ၍ တဖျစ်တောက်တောက် ရေရွတ်နေသည်။ စိတ်သက်သာရာရအောင် သူ ပြုနေခြင်းဖြစ်ပါ လိမ့်မည်။ သို့ရာတွင် စိတ်သက်သာရာပုံ မပေါ်ပါ။

[Introductory Note]

He wrote a masterpiece of prose poetry called Platero and I, which details his life in Andalusia with his beloved silver donkey, Platero. Chapter 27 of that book is explicitly titled "The Mangy Dog." Unlike Neruda's poem, Jiménez's piece is a short, heartbreaking story about the casual cruelty of the world.

[Narration]

He used to come... sometimes... skinny and panting... to the house in the orchard. 

The poor creature was always fleeing... accustomed to shouts and thrown stones. Even the other dogs would bare their fangs at him. 

And so... he would leave again... under the midday sun... slow and sad... down the hill. 

That afternoon, he arrived following behind Diana. 

As I was going out, the keeper—who in a flash of a cruel heart had pulled out his shotgun—fired at him. 

I had no time to prevent it. 

The wretched dog... with the shot in his entrails... spun around dizzily for a moment in a single, sharp, circular howl... 

...and fell dead under an acacia tree. 

Platero looked fixedly at the dog, his head held high. 

Diana... terrified... went hiding from one person to another.

Jiménez used chapters like this to inject a harsh, realistic look at human cruelty and violence toward animals, contrasting it beautifully against the innocent bond he shared with his donkey, Platero.
